Wilmington Rants!

Southeastern NC's Political & Economic Opinion Arena

So I get WDI (Wilmington Downtown Inc.) emails, and I noticed that there was a weird little image in the last one that referred to "Park(ing) Day". Hmmm... I wonder what that is? SO I go to the WDI website, and sure enough: http://www.wilmingtondowntown.com/

Still, there's no mention of what this is or why it is of any significance to us here in Wilmington. Next - I click on the Park(ing) Day website, and voila! http://parkingday.org/

It seems that there is a worldwide day in which...

"Citizen Activists around the globe turn parking spaces into mini-parks for a day to demonstrate the need for more urban green space."

There's the dumbest idea ever. But after solving that mystery, I started getting even more curious as to who was behind all of this. The idea is based on the call for more "green space". Which is usually code for "less enterprise", and indicative of such things as anti-free market capitalist thought, and radical environmental views. Just as I thought, reading through the Park(ing) website, you find a wealth of contempt for commercial, private, free enterprise, corporate "intrusion". Further investigation reveals that the commercial, private, free enterprise, corporate entity behind all of this feel-good nonsense is a company called Rebar from San Francisco, whose slogan is "Art Design Activism". Now it's getting good.

Further inquiry closely ties Rebar with an annual conference called "Toward a Just Metropolis", which is a diverse group of people "who share a passion for social, environmental and economic justice" - which could have served as Barack Obama's campaign slogan. http://www.justmetropolis.org/home/home

Within their conference the hardcore leftism starts to shine through. For one of many examples, there are lessons offered on "Decoding Military Landscapes" which is a precise pseudo-science that practices among other things militant anti-military views, encourages "hackable" anti-military web projects, and welcomes "struggles" against military urbanism "in all of its forms":

Weird stuff - and WDI likes it. what do you think?

Hmmm, I want everyone to repeat after me "This is John Hinnant's creation". He said to my face the way WDI was when he took over the reigns as Executive Director, that it wasn't "HIS CREATION" until he changed everything, employees etc. Well, he's done a fine job of it, wouldn't you say? Well, guess what, no matter WHAT changes he implements, it will NEVER be HIS CREATION....just a meaningless throne of which he thinks he is king. Ah, that felt good.
I think it was silly but I do have one question about it... There was a bike parked in the space in the picture in the newspaper. Don't bikes count as a vehicle? There are not very many bike racks downtown either so choices are pretty slim.
Hmmm, my trike is almost long as a car. It's longer if I have my trailer with it. I wonder if they would give me grief using one of the parking spaces for it since it really doesn't fit in a bike rack very well and I have to use regular car parking spaces most of the time when I go somewhere on it. I don't normally go downtown anymore except for the library and use their bike rack but if I had to go anywhere else around that area I would probably have to use a metered space for it.
