Wilmington Rants!

Apparently, we don't have any employees in the city, county, or in any of the nearly dozen or so municipalities who can do this themselves, despite the fact that we pay millions for them.  This apparently has to be oursourced.

StarNews:

The plan would set the stage for future trails and open space in New Hanover County and could make it easier to get grants for parks and trails.

The Wilmington City Council will consider spending 20,000 Tuesday night as a contribution for development of the plan. The WMPO is looking for $20,000 from the county as well and plans to put in $160,000 from the organization.
This of course is when in the same meeting City Council approved an extension of the finish date for the third leg of the cross city trail to about 2 years after originally projected.  By the way, this section of the trail is about 2 miles and costing us at least $1M a mile (it could be more, but I haven't gotten a breakdown I'm 100% satisfied with.)

Additionally, it's costing Wilmington more than $20,000 because we provide a lot of the funding for the MPO.  In fact, I was talking to the head of the MPO the other day and I got the impression that we pay for about 1/3 of their total costs.  They use our facilities.  They have seven employees and we pay for a good chunk of their compensation is the impression I got, but again I'm waiting for a clear breakdown of those numbers before I can say with 100% certainty.

So, that means a good chunk more than $20k is coming from Wilmington.

I think we already have enough parks and trails at the moment. The cross city trail isn't really very useful except as a nice ride.  If they feel the need to keep spending money that same $20k would could be used to update and finish up things that need to be done in the current parks. It wouldn't do a lot but it would be better used that way than paying more bleeding consultants all the time.  If they need input on future trails why not ask the people locally that would want to use them?
The most enraging thing is that despite the psychotic addiction to spending other people's money, and the constant "eff you" to taxpayers this city council continues to communicate, people still do not vote. I have been hammering this issue with every one of these issues that come up. I'm not surprised anymore when the next headline appears, such as the baseball stadium issue, because they are nothing but cockroaches. And you can't get mad at cockroaches for acting like cockroaches. What you can get mad at is the fact that this city continues to put up with this corruption and yet still continues to turn a blind eye at election time. Hopefully, this year will prove me wrong.
I agree Ben, too bad election time is not the same as TAX Time. But the voters only care what has been presented or done for them in the one month before the election. They will present the "Pretty Convention Center" and be damned if anything is mentioned that it can't make any money. What a wonderful Cross City Trail, but not connect it to the the bonds coming due. We lowered the valve of your house, but won't tell how they raised the tax rate. No sewer spills, but your water rates have gone down the toliet. Remember it has been stated "We don't have a spending problem, we have a revenue problem."
